"The role of tomorrowís HE in fostering
gender equity and employment"

The second of the HERN seminars was held at the Hotel Athens-Acropole in the centre of Athens and was hosted by the Department of Psychology of the National and Capodestrian University of Athens. Despite arriving on the day of a general strike all the delegates arrived without undue delay and the seminar proceeded faultlessly. The purpose of the seminar was:
- To make theoretical comparisons of different underlying economical, political
and social contexts for the employment prospects of female graduates
- To compare and analyse case studies of strategies for preparing female
students for transitions from education to work across different
subject areas (for e.g. women & science, women & technology)
- To contribute innovative ideas to enhance the study and employment prospects
for female students
- To contribute to end of year policy briefing paper for the influence of
future policy on relations between HE, gender and employment
The programme for Friday, 19 April 2002 opened with a welcome and introduction by Prof. Besevegis, head of the Department of Psychology followed by papers addressing the seminar themes:
- "Gender, education and employment in Greece: The role of the University of Athens in fostering female students employability" Despina Sidiropoulou-Dimakakou, Assistant Professor.
- "The present situation of university educational attainment of the population in Greece" Mrs. Natalia Sereti, Research Center for Gender Equality.
- "Strategies and actions of the Association of Greek Women Engineers (AGWE) for the improvement of entrepreneurial skills, values and attitudes of women engineers" Damiani Antanasioti, Vice-President of AGWE
- "The implementation of the Leonardo da Vinci-Project DIANA: Gender Stereotypes and Occupational Choices in the Greek Secondary Education" Katerina Kedraka, Educator-Career Counselor, Pedagogical Institute of Greece.
- "Gender studies at the Jagiellonian University Krakow, Poland" Dr. Malgorzata Radkiewicz
- "Latvia women in higher education and academic world" Baiba Rivza, Chairperson of the Council of Higher Education in Latvia
- "Consequences of the new labour market in Sweden" Hanna Westberg, Associated Professor, National Institute for Working Life
- "Equal access and gender" Jan Sramek, CHES, Czech Republic
The papers were followed by small group and plenary discussions to explore and develop the themes and issues arising from the presentations
On Saturday, 20 April the seminar continued with arrangements for the eForum followed by a Network management meeting
